Mecana has been providing pile cloth media filtration in conjunction with rotating biological contactors (RBC) as a compact solution for over 50 years. Wastewater passes via gently rotating disks, which act as carrier material in Mecana RBC fixed-bed biofilm reactors. The revolving, partially submerged disks alternately supply oxygen and wastewater to the biofilm. This ideal carrier-fixed biomass source allows for effective nitrification and the efficient breakdown of organic materials with a very low energy need. Extra sludge is either separated by PCMF, which is usual for compact plants, or sedimented in a later stage. For capacities ranging from 50 to 30,000 PE, RBC plants are utilized.
How RBC functions
Mecana RBC are made up of a central shaft that has disk segments positioned on it that are around 2 mm thick and spaced distinctly apart. The individual disks, which range in diameter from 2.0 to 3.6 m (RBC) or from 1.2 to 2.0 m (MK), are constructed primarily from recycled polypropylene and are put together from six or eight segments. The system is set up in a concrete or steel basin. During operation, a drive on the center shaft rotates the disks, which are submerged 40–60% of the way in the effluent. This allows the biomass that has settled on the disks to come into touch with both the nutrient-rich wastewater and the necessary oxygen on an alternating basis. The biomass uses biological processes to break down the contaminants present in the wastewater.

Rotating Biological Contactors Applications

  1. Biological nitrification and BOD removal from municipal and industrial wastewater
  2. Leachate from landfills
  3. Cleanup of groundwater

Rotating Biological Contactors Important Specifics

  1. Simple handling and operation are required
  2. No complicated process control is required.
  3. Direct drive with minimal energy usage
  4. Intake of oxygen without an aeration system
  5. Low maintenance because of strong and long-lasting technology
  6. Minimal space needed
  7. Even at low temperatures, nitration
