A selectively permeable barrier called a nanofiltration membrane is used to separate and purify materials at the molecular level. It is a polymer-based thin film that permits some ions and molecules to pass through while obstructing others according to their charge and size. These membranes are made with pores that are on the nanoscale, usually measuring between one and ten nanometers. Since nanofiltration membranes have smaller pore sizes than microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes, they can efficiently extract organic molecules, divalent ions, and micropollutants from liquid streams.
